Biosecurity Policy and FAQ

SRLV/CAE:

Since the name Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis limits the disease to goats (Caprine), it is now commonly called Small Ruminant Lentivirus (SRLV) among veteranarians since sheep are also seceptable to it. Here, we will refer to it as SRLV. Here are FAQs about our SRLV policy:

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm have any concern that SRLV might be in their herd?

A: In January 2025 we received surprising news on our annual SRLV test results, revealing that 2 of our does, a mother and daughter, were SRLV positive. HOWEVER, SRLV is not highly transmissible, except through milk, so it was not surprising that none of our other goats tested positive.

Q: What are we doing about it?

A: The two positive goats, along with their kids will be culled from our herd. For the time being, they are being kept in comfortable, strict isolation from the rest of the herd. The rest of the herd was tested negative for SRLV in January and May 2025.

Q: If I buy a goat, will it be tested for SRLV?

A: All adult goats for sale have been tested negative twice and kids are from clean tested parents.

For more info on SRLV, see the Merck Vet Manual: Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis

CL:

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm test their goats for CL?

A: Since you generally see signs of CL before the test comes back positive, we only feel its necessary to spot test. Our last negative test was in May 2025.

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm have any concern that CL might be in their herd?

A: We have NEVER had any reason to be concerned that any of our goats might have CL, and all of our tests have come back negative.

Johnes:

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm test their goats for Johnes?

A: We annually test all goats over 18 months of age for Johnes. Since it takes 1 1/2 - 4 years from the time of exposure to the time the goat tests positive, we only test goats over 18 months of age. Our last negative test was in May 2025.

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm have any concern that Johnes might be in their herd?

A: We have NEVER had any reason to be concerned that any of our goats might have Johnes, and all of our tests have come back negative.

Q Fever:

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm test their goats for Q Fever?

A: Since Q Fever spreads like wildfire through a herd, it is only necessary to spot test. Our last negative test was in May 2025.

Q: Does Willow Ridge Farm have any concern that Q Fever might be in their herd?

A: We have NEVER had any reason to be concerned that any of our goats might have Q Fever, and all of our tests have come back negative.
